Is Annapurna Circuit Trek For You?

Annapurna Circuit Trek falls in strenuous grade trekking. You have to trek 6/7 hours on average for 12 days. The trail varies from almost flat terrain to high mountain passes. You will be walking for days above 3000m elevation and need to pass Throungla 5416m, there is also a risk of altitude sickness. You need to be physically and mentally fit to do this trek.

Suggested preparation

  • Cardio exercises including running, cycling, jogging, push-ups, and pull-ups for about 4-5 days a week for 3 months before your trip will come in extremely handy.
  • You should also be involved in developing core strengths. and muscle endurance in weight training.
  • Hiking in the hills in different weather conditions will be good preparation for this trip.
  • If you have access, kayaking will also be a very good way to develop the strength and endurance required for this trip.

Major Attractions of Annapurna Circuit trek

1. Pokhara 

Pokhara is a wonderful city to spend a day in. It is home to many beautiful lakes such as Phewa, Rupa, Begnas, etc. There are many historically significant and adventurous places such as Bat Cave, Mahendra Cave, Devi’s Fall, etc. The ridge of Sarangkot is one of the most beautiful viewpoints to behold the sunrise and sunset.  You can have an amazing view of the Annapurna range from there. You will spend a day in Pokhara exploring these amazing places. 

2. Muktinath Temple 

Muktinath is a sacred pilgrimage site of Hindus and Buddhists. It is the Vishnu temple that lies in the Mustang district. It is believed that you will get salvation after visiting this temple and performing Puja. So, many devotees come here every year. It is equally significant for Tibetan Buddhists as they believe the Murti here is a manifestation of Avalokiteshvara who embodies the compassion of Buddha. This temple provides you with an amazing panorama of the Annapurna and Dhaulagiri mountain range. 

3. Thorong La Pass and Kaligandaki Gorge

Thorong La Pass (5416 m) is the most beautiful vantage point throughout the journey and the highest elevation you will be achieving. You have to cross a challenging route, covered in unstable boulders to get there. The path is windy and covered in snow. However, the view from the Pass is the most satisfying one. You can have a clear and amazing view of mountains such as  Annapurna Massif, Dhawalagiri, Machhcapuchre, Manaslu, Gangapurna, Tilicho, etc. The view of Kaligandaki gorge from the way to Jomsom is also thrilling. It is the deepest gorge of the world carved by Dhawalagiri and Annapurna peaks. 

4. Jomsom Village 

Jomsom is one of the beautiful villages of the Himalaya region with an airport that connects to Pokhara. It is the last destination of Annapurna Circuit Trek. What Is The Weather of Annapurna Circuit Trek

Summer

You will experience a moderate amount of rainfall on your Annapurna Circuit trek during the summer season. However, the temperature is cool at a higher elevation with relatively less rainfall. 

In addition, you will experience warm weather conditions with lush vegetation around the hills and landscapes. Normally, the temperature ranges from 15-17 degrees Celsius during the time to 5-7 degrees Celsius at night. You will enjoy the quiet trail and experience the wilderness of the splendid Annapurna region.

Winter

Winter is the time of extreme cold weather conditions and frequent snowfalls. Moreover, the temperature ranges from 10 to 15-degree Celsius during the day time to below 0 degrees at night. 

However, you can still enjoy an amazing trekking experience with the help of expert guides and right trekking gears. In addition, you will enjoy a quiet trek with the stunning sunshine and flowing winds along the trek. 

Autumn

Autumn is one of the peak seasons for Annapurna Circuit trek Expedition as the season offers pleasant and comfortable weather conditions. However, the weather patterns can still be unpredictable and changeable at higher altitude regions.

The temperature ranges from 10-15 degrees Celsius at night and on the other hand 0-5 degrees Celsius at night. Spring

Spring is another delightful season to enjoy the magnificence of the Annapurna region as the weather is warmer with longer days. Due to the perfect weather conditions, you will encounter travelers on the trail and tea house during this time around. 

Furthermore, you will enjoy the thriving rhododendron forest blooming in the hillsides as you hike along with the Annapurna sanctuary. The temperature usually ranges from 17-20 degrees Celsius during the day and 0-7 degrees Celsius at night.

Important information on Annapurna Circuit Trek

The difficulty of Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a challenging trek as it requires long day hikes for 21 days along the rocky, gravel-strewn trails. In addition, you will have to walk exhausting uphills and downhills routes on your trek. Therefore, the trail is fairly challenging for travelers with no trekking experience.

However, any stable, fit person can easily hike for 4-8 hours per day to complete this trek. In addition, covering the total distance of 15 km each day will take the most out of you. Furthermore, the tiring ascends to places like Thorung Phedi 4,925m and Thorung La pass 5,415m will test your mental endurance. Therefore, you need to prepare yourself physically and mentally for the Annapurna Circuit trek.

Travel Insurance for Annapurna Circuit Trek

You will need travel insurance from a reliable company to trek any region in Nepal. You should consider the travel policy and coverage for every extra expenditure like various injuries, health issues, or accidents. In addition, you should make sure that it covers all the costs of an ambulance, helicopter evacuation, treatment fees, doctor’s fees, and hospital charges.

Altitude Sickness in Annapurna Circuit Trek

You will start your Annapurna Circuit Trek from the elevation of at Besisahar 760m to the highest point of the entire trek at Thorong La Pass 5,415m. Therefore, some of you will feel the effects of the rising altitude from 1,500 to 2,000 meters upwards. As the altitude gradually increases, you will experience less oxygen there in the air than your breath. 

Making a quick descent in the higher altitudes will increase the chances of oxygen deprivation in the form of High altitude sickness. You will experience early symptoms like confusion, Clumsiness, Headache, and nausea. Therefore, you need to ascend Ascend slowly to the higher altitude consuming plenty of water and food

Do I need a Guide or a Porter for Annapurna Circuit Trek?

Training For Annapurna Circuit Trek

Annapurna Circuit Trek is a high-altitude trek with a considerable amount of hiking days on the rugged and rocky terrains of the Annapurna region. You will hike for 6-8 hours for most of the days on the Annapurna Circuit trek Expedition. However, you don’t have to worry as the trek is a slow stable hike the entire 21 days trek. 

Moreover, you will have to cover the total distance of 160 km to 230 km depending on the route you take on the Annapurna Circuit trek. Therefore, you will need to prepare your body for the strenuous trek ahead. Moreover, we recommend you to get a health check-up with your personal doctor prior to the trek.

In addition, you will have to start the routine exercise in the gym to get yourself ready for the trip. You have to focus on cardio exercise and focus on strengthening the muscle on your leg and upper body. Exercises like jogging, swimming, and cycling will help you develop your durability and endurance level. Itineraries

First Day

Day 1:Arrive at Kathmandu Airport

• Accommodation: 3-Star Hotel
• Altitude: 1345 m
The first place you will get to see after arriving in Nepal is the great city of Kathmandu. This place features various cultural and religious sites. Upon your arrival, our representatives will pick you up from the airport and transfer you to a 3-star hotel. If you are tired after your flight, you can spend the rest of the time in your hotel and go to spas, bars or restaurants in the evening. Else you can go out and stroll around the streets of Thamel or visit some sites. We will give you a short briefing and you may prepare for the trek.

Second Day

Day 2:Orientation and Sightseeing around Kathmandu Valley

• Accommodation: 3-Star Hotel
• Altitude: 1345 m
You will have breakfast at the hotel and you will set out for sightseeing in Kathmandu valley. Our private vehicle will come to pick you up at your hotel. You will be visiting 5 of the UNESCO world heritage sites. Apart from that, you will visit many of the places of historical and cultural significance. Beginning from Swayambhunath stupa you will explore Patan Durbar Square, Boudhanath stupa, Pashupatinath temple and Kathmandu durbar square respectively. Our professional guides will guide you through all of the places. You can stroll around the streets of Thamel and go shopping for your trip.

Third Day

Day 3:Drive from Kathmandu to Chamje

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 7-8 hours
• Altitude: 1430 m
• Tourist Bus
You will take a ride to Chamje along Kathmandu-Pokhara Highway. This ride may take about 8 hours. First, you will get to Dumre and then to Beshisahar, headquarters of Lamjung district. You will get some amazing views of mountain peaks from here. You will pass through beautiful green landscapes. You will reach Chamje and stay here overnight.

Fourth Day

Day 4:Trek from Chamje to Dharapani

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 6-7 hours approx.
• Altitude: 1860 m
Your trekking journey begins from Chamje. You will descend down to Marsyangdi river and ascend the steep uphill trail to Sattale. Then you will climb the zigzag path to the top of the hill and descend down and walk along the riverbank to get to Tal. You can enjoy some mesmerizing waterfalls here. Walking further, you will reach Karte village. Then again you descend down to the riverbank, cross the suspension bridge and climb uphill to reach your destination of the day (Dharapani). You will spend your night at a teahouse in Dharapani.

Fifth Day

Day 5:Trek from Dharapani to Chame

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 5-6 hours approx.
• Altitude: 2670 m
After waking up and having your breakfast, you will start your trek towards Chame. First, you will reach Danaque after walking through beautiful Oak and Pine forest. Then, you will cross a small wooden bridge and walk a steep path which leads to Timang. Timang is a village rich in gorgeous landscapes, lying on the foot of Lamjung Himal. Then you walk a relatively flat terrain to reach Chame which features a beautiful hot spring. You will spend your night at a tea house in Chame.

Sixth Day

Day 6:Trek from Chame to Pisang

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 5-6 hours approx.
• Altitude: 3300 m
You will wake up early in the morning with the sparkling view of sunrise over Lamjung Himal (6893 m). You will follow the high, rocky trail covered with Pine fir and Pine forest and walk the steep trail to get to Baratang. Then again you will follow the Pine forest. In the end, you will reach a beautiful valley which offers a magnificent view of the surrounding landscape and mountains. Walking further, you will reach the lower village of Pisang where you will spend your night.

Seventh Day

Day 7:Trek from Pisang to Manang Valley

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 5-6 hours approx.
• Altitude: 3640 m
You will start your trek and head towards a steep ridge which gives you the picturesque views of Manang valley and Tilicho peak (7145 m). Then you will descend past the airstrip at Hungde and reach a flat area which offers magnificent views of north-east face of Annapurna III. Continuing your trek, you will reach Sabje Khola valley. This place is a great spot to view Annapurna IV (7525 m). Walking further, you will get to a wooden bridge over Marsyangdi Khola which takes you to Mungji. You will climb a steep uphill from there to reach Manang. You will stay overnight at Manang, a village rich in culture and awe-inspiring views.

Eighth Day

Day 8:Rest day at Manang and hang in and around the town

• Altitude: 3640 m
As Manang is at an altitude of more than 3000 m and you soon will be ascending to Thorung- La pass, altitude sickness might affect you. To avoid the risk of altitude sickness and to cope with the increasing altitude, you take an acclimatization rest at Manang valley. As a part of your acclimatization, you can hike above the valley (Khansar village ) to get an exceptionally beautiful panorama of Annapurna range. You can walk across the river to the icefall of Annapurna or you can trek to the beautiful Gangapurna glacier lake. Or you can stroll around the Manang valley and explore the people, their culture and lifestyle.

Ninth Day

Day 9:Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 3-4 hours approx.
• Altitude: 4050 m
Enjoy the views of Gangapurna, Glacier Dom, Tilicho Peak, Chulu West and Manaslu Range etc
Though you just spent a whole day yesterday acclimatizing, you will still have to continue your trek slowly in this high altitude of elevation more than 4000 m. Leaving Manang, you will ascend a gentle slope towards Gunsang village. You can enjoy the spectacular views of Gangapurna, Glacier Dom, Tilicho Peak, Chulu West, Manaslu Range and Annapurna range, etc. You will stay overnight at a tea house in Yak Kharka.

Tenth Day

Day 10:Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorung Phedi

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 3-4 hours approx.
• Altitude: 4450 m
You will leave Yak Kharka early in the morning and set off for Thorung Phedi. You will follow the trail that ascends gradually upward along a ridge. Then you will descend downhill to the headwaters of Marsyangdi and cross the wooden bridge. You will ascend a narrow trail and then finally descend to reach the Thorung Phedi. You will spend your night here.

Eleventh Day

Day 11:Trek from Thorung Phedi to Muktinath via Thorung La (5416 m) Pass

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 7-8 hours approx.
• Altitude: 3760 m
Trekking towards Thorung La Pass, you might find the path quite difficult since you will reach the highest elevation of the whole trek. Reaching Thorung La Pass, you will get spectacular views of Thorung Peak, Annapurna Range, Dhaulagiri range, Nilgiri etc as well as of Kali Gandaki valley and the lush hills of Mustang. The next place you will go to is Muktinath, a place where Hindu and Buddhist pilgrims go in hopes to be liberated or gain moksha. The trail is an easy downhill path along Jhong Khola. Reaching Muktinath, you can explore the cultural and religious aspects of the temple.

Twelfth Day

Day 12:Trek Muktinath to Jomsom

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 5-6 hours approx.
• Altitude: 2270 m
You will descend down to Kaligandaki Gorge from Muktinath. The trail shares geographical similarity with Tibet. You will pass through the Jharkot and Khingar village whose architectures are similar to the Tibetan architecture. You will get the mesmerizing view of Nilgiri peak along the way. Trekking further downward, you will reach the beautiful Marpha village. Thakali people reside there. You will walk along the beautiful stone pavers stairs of the village. You descend further from Marpha to get to the beautiful Jomsom village. You will have an extraordinary view of Nilgiri and Dhawalagiri from Jomsom. You will spend your night here.

Thirteenth Day

Day 13:Fly back from Jomsom to Pokhara

• Accommodation: Teahouse
• Trek Hours: 20 minutes
• Altitude: 820 m
• Domestic flight
You will complete your circuit trek by flying from Jomsom to Pokhara. It is a 20 minutes flight and you can enjoy an aerial view of the region. Reaching Pokhara, you will have lots of fun activities you can take part in. You can go sightseeing, go boating in Phewa and Begnas lakes, and visit other lakes, visit caves like Mahendra and Bat caves, etc. You can also go to bars, restaurants, etc. to try new foods and enjoy live music. You may go shopping to buy souvenirs, art pieces, handicrafts, etc.

Fourteenth Day

Day 14:Drive back to Kathmandu

• Trek Hours: 6-7 hours approx.
• Altitude: 1345 m
• Private Vehicle
You will have breakfast at Pokhara and drive to Kathmandu. You will have a scenic bus ride for about 6/7 hours to get to Kathmandu. You will come ride through the beautiful river valleys covered in greenery. Upon your arrival at Kathmandu, you can get into the hotel and relax. You can shop souvenirs and handicrafts, stroll around the street etc. You will enjoy a farewell dinner organized by Sublime Trails. There will be cultural dances and traditional food items you can experience. You can share your success story with other trekkers as well.

Fifteenth Day

Day 15:Departure

Today is the last day of your trekking package and you will return to your home or your next destination. Our representative will drop you to the airport and bid you farewell. If you are going to stay in Nepal, we can plan some other activities for you. Sublime Trails will be happy to be of any help to you.

Our guides and other team members are well experienced and trained to handle minor problems. In case of emergency conditions, helicopter evacuations are available. Make sure your insurance covers all the expenses for such evacuations.

You have to inform a few days ahead for that. If our team is not in a tight schedule, you can also trek to Tlicho lake. However, the price of the package will be changed accordingly.

The trekking region falls in remote areas in Nepal hence is difficult. The trail gets difficult sometimes and you have to cross some landslide area as well which might be a bit risky. Another risk is altitude sickness in the high altitude region. Our team will put their best effort to keep you safe from all kinds of risks. There are going to be such risks as it is an adventure but your safety will be our first priority.

It is not safe to drink water from tap water and streams. The mineral water might not be available on the way. So, bringing the water purification pills with you is the best option for you.
